King Cab features wide-opening doors and a rear seat delete option.

Believe it or not, it’s been just over two years since the new Nissan Titan made its debut. At the time, we were told the whole Titan lineup would be rolled out over slowly, and now, at the Chicago Auto Show, Nissan presents the last piece of the fullsize pickup puzzle, the King Cab.

Available on both half-ton Titan and heavy-duty Titan XD models, the King Cab slots between the Single and Crew Cab configurations, with rear-hinged back doors that swing open a full 170 degrees. All models come standard with a bench seat that flips up, for hauling bigger items. But Nissan also offers an exclusive rear seat delete option, if you just want to use that extra space behind the front seats for hauling.

The standard engine for Titan King Cab models is Nissan’s 5.6-liter naturally aspirated V8, with 390 horsepower and 394 pound-feet of torque, mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. That same engine is available on the XD King Cab, though like other XD models, Nissan offers its 5.0-liter turbodiesel V8 with 310 hp and 555 pound-feet of torque. All models are available with either two- or four-wheel drive. The base Titan can carry up to 1,640 pounds of payload, and tow as much as 9,420 pounds. The heavy-duty XD, on the other hand, with its diesel engine, can tow up to 12,510 pounds. Payload capacity for the XD maxes out at 2,710 pounds, though that’s with the gasoline engine.

All Titan King Cab models will go on sale this spring, in S, SV, and Pro-4X trims. Expect pricing to be revealed closer to the on-sale date. For now, scroll through Nissan’s release, below, for more details.

— King Cab available for both TITAN half-ton and TITAN XD with 6.5-foot bed length
— Retains rear hinge door design with wide-opening feature for easy access to 2nd row

— Like all 2017 TITAN and TITAN XD models, new King Cab backed by America’s Best Truck 100,000-mile / 5-year Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty1

CHICAGO (Feb. 9, 2017) – Nissan today revealed the new 2017 TITAN and TITAN XD King Cab models, completing the lineup of innovative new full-size pickups. The world debut announcement came during a media event at the Chicago Auto Show. Also on display at the show, which runs at Chicago’s McCormick Place from February 11-20, are a specially built Nissan NV Cargo X and two specially modified TITAN PRO-4X models.

The new King Cab is marked by its available 6-person seating, wide-opening rear doors and available “rear seat delete” option that is ideal for commercial use with its flat floor and secure in-cab storage space.

“The launch of the new King Cab body is the last step in a journey that began in December 2015 with the debut of the breakthrough TITAN XD, which continues to carve out a unique white space between competitors’ heavy-duty and half-ton trucks,” said Fred Diaz, division vice president and general manager, North America Trucks and Light Commercial Vehicles, Nissan North America, Inc. “Now, with the addition of a half-ton TITAN, our new Endurance® V8, three body configurations, three bed lengths and a range of grade levels and equipment packages, we’re covering nearly every segment in the personal and commercial full-size truck markets. Add to that the industry’s best 5-year/100,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and the TITAN family is even more compelling.”

The TITAN King Cab will be offered in 4×4 and 4×2 drive and three grade levels – S, SV and PRO-4X – each with a standard 390-horsepower 5.6-liter Endurance® V8 engine and 7- speed automatic transmission. TITAN King Cab offers an available maximum towing capacity of 9,420 pounds and maximum payload capacity of 1,640 pounds when properly equipped.

The TITAN XD King Cab similarly will be available in 4×4 and 4×2 drive and three grade levels – S, SV and PRO-4X. Two driveline choices are offered with the TITAN XD King Cab: the 390-horsepower 5.6-liter Endurance® V8 engine with 7-speed automatic or powerful Cummins® 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel – rated at 310 horsepower and a hefty 555 lb-ft of torque – matched with a heavy-duty 6-speed Aisin A466ND automatic transmission. TITAN XD King Cab offers an available maximum towing capacity of 12,510 pounds (diesel engine) and maximum payload capacity of 2,710 pounds (gas engine) when properly equipped.

Like the TITAN and TITAN XD Crew Cab and Single Cab models, the new King Cab body was designed by Nissan Design America in San Diego, California. The body features a roomy cab with a choice of front split bench seat or front bucket seats (standard on PRO-4X, optional on SV grade). A 60/40-split fold-down rear seat is also standard. Heated front seats are available with PRO-4X and SV grade, along with optional heated and cooled front seats on PRO-4X.

The new King Cab also offers a first-in-segment “rear seat delete” option, which removes the rear seat, rear heater duct and rear roof-mounted assist grips and adds a flat rear load floor and rear wall finisher with tie-down hooks.

“This feature is going to be extremely well received by commercial truck buyers for its extra utility and secure, climate-safe storage space inside the cab. It’s a real workhorse like the new Single Cab, but with more flexibility to stow equipment and other valuables,” said Diaz. “Nissan is becoming a strong player in the commercial vehicle market with our NV vans and industry leading warranty. Now, with the new King Cab and Single Cab models, we expect to grow our worksite presence with TITAN and TITAN XD as well.”

As part of the American TITAN lineup, the new King Cab was developed with core Nissan planning, design, engineering and manufacturing teams contributing from Tennessee, California, Michigan, Arizona and Mississippi. The TITAN and TITAN XD King Cabs are assembled in Canton, Mississippi, with its V8 engines assembled in Decherd, Tennessee and Cummins diesel engines assembled in Columbus, Indiana.

All 2017 TITAN and TITAN XD models are covered by Nissan’s “America’s Best Truck Warranty”1 – featuring bumper-to-bumper coverage of 5-years/100,000-miles, whichever comes first. Vehicles covered by the new warranty, which includes basic and powertrain coverage, include all V8 gasoline and diesel powered models.

The 2017 TITAN half-ton was named “2017 Pickup Truck of the Year” by Truck Trend magazine. The award represents “a real-world evaluation of pickups as seen through the eyes of truck experts and enthusiasts,” according to the magazine. In addition to the TRUCK TREND 2017 Pickup Truck of the Year title, 2017 TITAN models were recently named “Full-size Truck of Texas,” “Commercial Vehicle of Texas” and “Best Value” by the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA), and given an “Extreme Off-Road” title by journalists participating in the Active Lifestyle Vehicle Awards (ALV).

Nissan adds King Cab to Titan and Titan XD pickups

Nissan adds King Cab to Titan and Titan XD pickups

Nissan has renewed its efforts in the full-size truck market with a redesigned Titan and a Titan XD that sits between the light and heavy duty segments. The rollout started late in 2015 with the XD, and the light duty Titan followed last year. Both trucks have thus far been offered as two-door regular cab and four-door Crew Cab body styles.

Now Nissan is continuing (completing?) the Titan rollout with King Cab body styles for both trucks.

Like the Crew Cabs, the King Cabs come with four doors, but the rear doors are smaller and have a rear-hinge instead of front-hinge design. That means the front doors need to be opened to get the rear doors open.

The King Cabs come only with a 6.5-foot bed. The regular cab has an 8-foot bed, the half-ton Crew Cab has a 5.5-foot bed, and the Titan XD Crew Cab comes with a 6.5-foot bed.

While the Titan model lineup consists of S, SV, Pro-4X, SL, and Platinum Reserve, the King Cab is only available for the S, SV, and Pro-4X.

2017 Nissan Titan King Cab

The King Cab has seating for up to six. Buyers can get front bucket seats to reduce that to five and they can opt to delete the three-passenger second-row seat. When the rear seat is deleted, the rear heater duct and rear roof-mounted assist grips also go, and a rear wall finisher with tie-down hooks is added to improve the storage utility of the flat rear load floor.

Titan XD buyers will be able to get the King Cab with the 390-horspower gasoline V-8 or the 5.6-liter Cummins diesel V-8 that makes 310 horsepower and 555 pound-feet of torque. Like the other body styles, the light duty version will come only with the gas V-8.

In half-ton form, the Titan King Cab offers 9,420 pounds of max towing capacity and a max payload capacity of 1,640 pounds. The max towing capacity for the Titan XD is 12,510 pounds, which is achieved with the turbodiesel engine, and the max payload is 2,710 pounds, which is possible with the gas engine.

Watch for the Nissan Titan King Cabs to go on sale this spring.

Nissan Titan

(Crew Cab).

Nissan Titan King Cab 2017

Last year, Nissan made quite a splash with the full size Titan XD. A brawny, V8 turbo diesel truck aimed squarely at the sweet spot between light and heavy duty pickups. Well, now comes the ever more important ½-ton titan. As the volume entry against the big-3, let’s see if they have anything to worry about.

Surely you’ve seen a lot of Nissan Titans on the road, but this full-size truck has only been a modest success for the brand. And, there were rumors it might not be redesigned.

Well, bury that thought. Clearly Nissan is after a much larger piece of the full-size truck pie with a gen two, ground-up Titan redesign for 20-17.

Now, bowing to reality, Nissan doesn’t expect to lure away many die-hard Ford, Chevy, and Ram buyers. But, rather attract first-time big-truck buyers, especially import brand owners, with a fresher full-size entry. Although, all Titans are U.S. built, assembled in Canton, Mississippi.

Powering their sales goal is Nissan’s updated 5.6-liter Endurance V8, now with 390-horsepower and 394 lb-ft. of torque; connected to a 7-speed automatic transmission. A more fuel efficient V6 arrives later.

On the road, Titan feels every bit as solid and formidable as its domestic competition, but when you arrive in the parking lot or a tight driveway it feels more maneuverable.

You might think it would feel less powerful than the larger XD diesel, but with a whopping 1,500–lbs. less weight to haul around, it feels every bit as menacing. And it can do almost as much work, towing up to 9,390-lbs.

The look is big truck cumbersome, though surely Nissan would prefer to call it bold. Having much more in common with the XD than the previous Titan ½-ton. But there’s 11.8-inches less wheelbase, and about 15-inches less to overall length than the XD. And even with a more macho appearance, aerodynamics are 10% better than the original Titan.

Platinum reserve trim is available to appeal to luxury minded buyers and the PRO-4X for the rugged types. The latter includes 18-inch wheels with 275/70 A/Ts, Bilstein shocks, skid plates, and a locking rear diff.

The new Titan is available as Crew Cab only at launch, with a 5½-foot bed; a foot shorter than the XD, but King and Single cabs will follow shortly, with beds up to 8-foot.

Productivity aids include adjustable tie downs, LED bed rail lighting, and a kick out bed step.

Stepping up into the driver’s seat, you’ll find plenty of comfort for long hauls, as well as lots of big knobs on the center stack. Here, things are mostly the same as in the XD, with just about every convenience feature you expect available; including navigation, heated and ventilated seats, heated steering wheel, Around View monitor, trailer brake controller, Rockford Fosgate audio, and even remote start.

The crew cab’s Rear seat area is incredibly roomy, and those seats are configurable for both seating and multiple storage options. Plenty of bins and big cup holders are found throughout the cabin too.

4×4’s get a traditional part-time setup with dash mounted selector, as well as a bit more ground clearance. Titan can handle a wide range conditions, and feels very rugged when banging through obstacles.

Now off to the track, where we found a bit of the usual empty-bed V8 pickup wheel spin with our PRO-4X 4X4, but still got off to a 7.3-second 0-60.

Power builds gradually all the way up the tach, until shifts happen quickly with little loss of momentum. 15.8-seconds was our best ¼-mile time at 92 miles-per-hour, with a nice low growl from the exhaust.

Handling was very similar to the rest of the full-size brigade; top heavy and slow to react. No better or worse than any others we’ve tested.

Steering felt a little heavier here than expected, but this PRO-4X is geared more towards romping over things, than scooting around them.

Government Fuel Economy Ratings are 15-City, 20-Highway, and 17-Combined, we only managed a 16.2 miles-per-gallon average on Regular. So the Energy Impact Score is quite poor at 19.4-barrels of annual oil use, along with 8.7-tons of CO2 emissions.

While not a bargain, it is certainly competitively priced, with a base Titan S starting at $35,975. Add about 3-grand for 4X4, or step up to the PRO-4X with standard four-wheel-drive at $46,215.

We doubt the Big-3 or even Toyota will admit that Nissan’s new Titan is a concern. Still, we think they are heading in a smart direction; both with this volume-leader 2017 Titan, and the heavier duty Titan XD.

And, we also think even the most jaded truck owners could find a lot to like in the new Titan lineup. Plus, now there can be no doubt; Nissan is in the full-size truck game to stay.

One of the Titan’s best traits is its bumper-to-bumper warranty. At five years/100,000 miles, it offers extra assurance to individual owners and fleet operators alike. You also may be happy to know the Nissan Titan is built in America — the truck in Mississippi, its powerful V8 engine in Tennessee.

The Titan still can’t match the features, sophistication, fuel economy, torque output, tow rating, or powertrain options of the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado or Ram 1500. While the Titan offers a diesel engine in its larger XD variant, you can’t get one in a half-ton version, as you can in a Ram 1500.

What’s New for 2017

Following last year’s introduction of the larger Nissan Titan XD that aims to fill white space between half-ton and heavy-duty pickups comes this, the all-new 2017 Nissan Titan half-ton. It is initially available as a V8 crew cab, with more cab configurations and a base V6 engine coming later.

2017 Nissan TITAN Single Cab Expert Review

The Nissan Titan pickup truck enters its second generation as an all-new model for 2017. Long an also-ran among far better-selling rivals like the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado and even the Toyota Tundra, the Titan has a multi-point plan to better compete this time around. Unlike the 1st-gen Titan, this Nissan half-ton pickup will offer a variety of configurations, from a single cab to crew cab, a V8 or V6 engine, and best-in-class warranty — five years or 100,000 miles. The 2017 Titan also offers helpful features for securing cargo, a damped tailgate and the PRO-4X off-road model. Still, the Titan faces an uphill battle against ever-fresher rivals and, warranty aside, struggles to stand out in any one major area.

With Nissan’s 5.6-liter V8 Endurance engine humming under the hood, the 2017 Titan pickup truck feels powerful, while the added insulation and the cabin’s laminated side glass help make this Nissan truck remarkably quiet. When you put your foot into it, the V8 does bellow a satisfying roar, and the Titan’s standard 7-speed automatic transmission smoothly ticks through gears. Those are among the new Titan’s best traits. But compared to other full-size trucks, the Titan can feel cumbersome. Steering effort is high in low-speed settings such as parking lots, and the truck in general tends to feel even bigger than it is in smaller confines. In our time using the Titan as an actual truck for duties like hauling grain or towing a car, the V8 Nissan Titan certainly didn’t protest, but it didn’t feel as effortless as an F-150 equipped with a twin-turbocharged V6.

DAMPED TAILGATE
Standard on all 2017 Titan trucks, this feature gently and slowly lowers the tailgate rather than letting it just slam down. Conversely, it’s also remarkably easy to lift back into place, too.

WARRANTY
At five years/100,000 miles, the 2017 Nissan Titan easily offers the best warranty among pickup trucks. Those numbers beat its rivals by two years or 64,000 miles, and could help sway individuals and business owners alike.

Initially, all 2017 Titan models are 2-row, crew-cab configurations. Lower trims can seat up to six passengers thanks to a 40/20/40-split front bench, but most buyers will opt for a pair of front bucket seats, lowering total capacity to five. Interior materials and amenities range from a cloth-and-vinyl basic work truck to the plushness of a luxury car. The top-line Platinum Reserve Titan, for instance, features supple leather, heated and ventilated front seats and open-pore wood finishes. The 60/40-split rear seats can be flipped up to create a secure, wide and tall space in the rear of the cab.

If the all-new Titan seems bigger, bolder and brasher, your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you. From the honeycombed grille to the headlight housings and mirrors, everything seems to have gone up a size — or three. It should be obvious that the Titan is a substantial rig. The half-ton Titan is 228.1 inches long — which is still over a foot shorter than the Titan XD that is built on a different, more robust chassis. The initial crew-cab models feature a standard 5.5-foot bed. When single-cab and king-cab variants join the lineup, 6.5- and 8-foot beds will also be available.

The 2017 Nissan Titan half-ton truck is available in five trims: S, SV, PRO-4X, SL and Platinum Reserve. The least expensive S version is pretty basic but does include cruise control, air conditioning, power windows, manual sliding rear window and a 6-speaker audio system with 5-inch display with Bluetooth connectivity and USB input. Most buyers would do well to step up a trim or two. SV versions provide the option for front bucket seats, which also allow for height adjustment. They also include trailer-sway control, power-adjust mirrors, upgraded cloth interior, SiriusXM satellite radio and chrome accents.

Keep moving up trims and you can get a leather interior, climate-controlled front seats, safety features like blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, upgraded 7-inch infotainment system with navigation, Rockford Fosgate premium audio system, sonar-based front and rear parking assist, and the helpful AroundView bird’s-eye-camera system. Off-road enthusiasts might dig the PRO-4X model that includes Bilstein shocks, all-terrain off-road tires, electronic locking rear differential and skidplates.

For now, just one engine is available in the Nissan Titan — a stout 5.6-liter gasoline V8. (A V6 is set to join the lineup later. If you want a diesel Titan, you’ll have to step up to the Titan XD, which offers a 5.0-liter Cummins V8). This big V8 is connected to a 7-speed automatic transmission and can be had in standard rear-wheel drive (2WD) or 4-wheel drive (4WD). The engine makes a hearty 390 horsepower, but beware of its thirst. Titan 4×2 models are rated to tow up to 9,390 pounds, while 4-wheel-drive versions max out at 9,230 pounds.

5.6-liter V8
390 horsepower @ 5,800 rpm
394 lb-ft of torque @ 4,000 rpm
EPA city/highway fuel economy: 15/21 mpg (2WD & 4WD), 15/20 mpg (PRO-4X)

Note: Due to changes in EPA testing to more effectively reflect real-world conditions, some 2017 models show slightly lower fuel-economy scores than their 2016 versions.

Nissan Unveils 2017 Nissan Titan King Cab With Unique Rear-Seat Delete

At the 2017 Chicago Auto Show, Nissan unveiled the final piece of its new Titan truck strategy with their Nissan Titan King Cab model (extended cab). With wide-opening rear doors and an innovative rear-seat delete option, it makes for an interesting new option in the marketplace.

The Nissan Titan King Cab will be offered in 4×4 and 4×2 drive and three grade levels – S, SV and PRO-4X – each with a standard 390-horsepower 5.6-liter Endurance V8 engine and 7-speed automatic transmission.

Noteworthy on this truck is the wide-opening rear doors (suicide doors) that allow for maximum accessibility of the rear cargo space. Also, the optional rear-seat delete feature allows for commercial and residential customers, if they so choose, a usable space for storage they can lock inside the cab while retaining the 6.5′ bed. Nissan says the seat is removed as well as “rear heater duct and rear roof-mounted assist grips and adds a flat rear load floor and rear wall finisher with tie-down hooks.”

“This feature is going to be extremely well received by commercial truck buyers for its extra utility and secure, climate-safe storage space inside the cab. It’s a real workhorse like the new Single Cab, but with more flexibility to stow equipment and other valuables,” said Fred Diaz, division vice president and general manager, North America Trucks and Light Commercial Vehicles, Nissan North America, Inc.. “Nissan is becoming a strong player in the commercial vehicle market with our NV vans and industry leading warranty. Now, with the new King Cab and Single Cab models, we expect to grow our worksite presence with TITAN and TITAN XD as well.”

The 2017 Nissan TITAN King Cab is marked by its available 6-person seating, wide-opening rear doors and available “rear seat delete” option that is ideal for commercial use with its flat floor and secure in-cab storage space.

Also noteworthy is the 5 year bumper-to-bumper warranty on all Nissan trucks. This is another innovative idea from the company and is a useful tool to get consumers to try out the product.

With this final piece to their lineup, Nissan now offers 85 percent of the cab configurations and bed lengths that are possible in the truck market. Sales have been steadily climbing and this next year, Nissan may go from a forgotten competitor to a real truck maker.

The truck will be hitting dealer lots in the coming months.

2017 Nissan Titan
