Car Review: 2018 Toyota Corolla iM

One last hurrah for this former Scion-badged hatchback before its replacement comes next year


Your last chance to get a new Toyota Corolla iM is approaching quickly. Although the iM was added to Toyota’s lineup just last year after it spent a year as a Scion, it will soon be replaced by the 2019 Corolla Hatchback, which is completely redesigned, sportier, and will be arriving at dealers in August. But even though it’s at the end of its life cycle, the Corolla iM still has more to offer than the Corolla sedan, and buyers will likely see some incentives as dealers clear it out of their showrooms to make room for its replacement.

While the Corolla iM’s somewhat aggressive styling makes it look like a potential hot hatch, its lukewarm performance and handling make it more of an everyday workhorse rather than a corner-carving speedster. Suspension is tuned for comfort rather than for keeping the body parallel with the ground while cornering aggressively. There’s a fair amount of body roll through curves that belies its sporty silhouette, and steering is light and lacks engaging feedback. This is a fair trade off for most drivers though, since the iM’s cushy and compliant suspension soaks up bumps competently and without harshness, and provides a comfortable, quiet ride.

The iM is powered by a 1.8-litre, 137-horspower four that produces 127 lb.-ft. of peak torque, and again it emphasises the iM’s more pedestrian Corolla lineage. Although those numbers don’t seem that impressive, the Corolla iM actually launches with gusto from a stop and gets up to cruising speed quickly. You’re reminded of its modest output, however, when you pull out to make a pass and have to drop two or sometimes three gears on its six-speed manual to complete the task quickly. The engine is mechanically very quiet from the cabin, so much so that you often find yourself pulling a gear longer than unusual, especially if the sound-system is adjusted at a moderate level.

The one redeeming feature in the iM that does make driving it entertaining is the availability of a manual, which despite a longish throw shifts with near buttery smoothness. Clutch effort is also remarkably light, feeling almost like the pedal isn’t connected to anything. If you find manual gear changes too laborious you can also get a CVT for $835 above the manual’s $22,650 starting price.

Aside from the destination charge and taxes, that price won’t change much because there’s only one trim level to choose from, and it includes power locks and windows, manual tilt and telescoping steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, a seven-inch touchscreen, a great-sounding, Bluetooth-enabled six-speaker Pioneer sound system, a rear-view camera, and 17-inch alloy wheels. Unfortunately there’s no embedded navigation system, not even as an option, so you’ll either have to use your smart phone, or buy an aftermarket GPS unit. If you do use an add-on system, though, there is a highly polished vertical surface to the right of the touchscreen that makes an ideal and secure mounting point for a suction-cup base that puts the unit within easy reach.

The sub-compact five-door segment isn’t renowned for high luxury, so the iM’s interior is unembellished, but nonetheless inviting and roomy. There’s nothing in the interior that is designed to overwhelm or impress, but what is there is functional; the front seats are manually adjustable but they are comfortable; there’s a centre armrest the opens up to reveal a small storage compartment. Controls are within easy reach, though curiously the seat heat switches are located behind a door at the bottom of the centre stack, where you’ll also find the USB and auxiliary ports and a smart-phone cubby.

Two adults can fit in the rear seats unencumbered (Toyota claims the iM seats five comfortably but that’s an optimistic goal), and there’s plenty of storage space behind the rear seats for a full load of groceries with space to spare. Drop the 60/40-split seatbacks and you can fit surprisingly large boxes of Ikea furniture back there. One minor oversight is that there are no grab straps on the seatbacks to allow you to pull them back up from behind the car, so you have to lift them up through the rear doors. Access to the cargo is easy with a low rear deck height, and the floor is flat. Lifting the floor of the cargo compartment exposes a space-saver spare tire.

The iM includes Toyota Safety Sense with forward collision mitigation, auto high beams, and a lane departure warning that’s probably the least intrusive I’ve ever experienced, emitting a gentle beep when you sway off centre.

Despite its modest performance, the iM returns good fuel mileage, averaging 7.5L/100 km of about two-thirds urban driving, which is a bit better than the claimed 7.9L combined. That makes its 53-litre fuel tank good for about 700 km of driving before needing a fill up.

If you’re into hot hatches, you might be turned onto the Corolla iM by its sporty silhouette, but you’ll soon discover that it looks sportier than it drives and might be disappointed by its road manners. What it is, is a comfortable commuter that is very well equipped, and if you factor in potential future dealer incentives, it’s certainly worth taking one final look.

Corolla iM продается только в одном уровне отделки салона. Он хорошо оборудован и в нем устанавливают:

В этом сезоне Corolla iM продается только в одном уровне оснащения и является своеобразной версией седана обычной модели. Стоимость iM меньше чем хорошо оснащенной Corolla.

Можно выбрать лишь цвет, коробку передач и дополнительные аксессуары которые предлагают дилеры. В Corolla iM устанавливают 1,8 литровый четырехцилиндровый двигатель с характеристиками:

К нему комплектуют шестиступенчатую механику или бесступенчатый автомат CVT. В стандарте устанавливают такие функции безопасности:

Комфорт и оснащение

Если сравнивать с седаном, то у Corolla iM значительно лучше откликается рулевая система и двигатель. В сравнении с конкурентами модель не может порадовать производительностью.
Мощности недостаточно для получения удовольствия. Автоматическая коробка порадовала своей быстротой реакцией. Ускорение слишком плавное и бесшумное.
При сильно нажатой педали газа двигатель становится шумным и более быстрым. Но разгон слишком медленный. Показатель равен 10 секундам. Это хуже чем в среднем по сегменту на 1,5 секунды.
Педаль тормоза твердая. Для экстренного торможения необходимо 36,6 метра. Рулевая система не позволяет чувствовать положения передних колес.
Благодаря небольшим размерам Corolla iM позволяет гибко реагировать на обстоятельства и быстро маневрировать на парковках. Но наличие относительно большого крена огорчит любителей быстрой езды.
CVT быстро реагирует, обеспечивает плавное ускорение и способно имитировать ускоренное переключение. Спортивный режим двигателя позволяет удерживать высокие обороты двигателя при движении вверх на холм или обратно.

Круиз-контроль существенно облегчает поездку. Салон удобный для вождения и использования водителем функций. Но двигатель создает много шума. Передние сиденья одни из самых удобных в сегменте.
Даже для высокого водителя регулировка позволит найти наиболее удобную позицию кресла. Задние сиденья плоские. Но высота и положение спинки позволяет удобно разместиться.
Подвеска иногда пропускает сильные толчки. Но на ровной хорошей дороге она себя ведет замечательно. Мелкие бугорки для пассажиров почти незаметны.
Со всех сторон слышен звук ветра. А звук колес хорошо приглушается. Двигатель шумит с неприятной тональностью. Он слышен постоянно. Для водителя созданы приятные условия чтобы эффективно управлять функциями.

Дизайн салона реализован с красивыми и высококачественными материалами. Конечно, покупателями обязательно будет оценены старания дизайнеров.
Но задние места не позволяют взрослому разместиться с комфортом. Переключатели с кнопками размещены удобно. Интерфейс на сенсорном экране Toyota позволяет быстро понять где находится необходимая функция.
В меню виртуальные кнопки имеют подходящий размер для пальцев. Климат-контроль позволяет изменить температуру в салоне очень быстро. Двери легко открываются. А их размер позволяет удобно сесть и выйти из Corolla iM.

Задняя часть крыши вокруг головы незначительно уменьшает свободное пространство. Сзади в ногах меньше свободного пространства чем у Golf и Forte.
Но сиденье не такое узкое как у них. Задние стойки ухудшают круговой обзор для водителя. Передний обзор хороший. А сзади устанавливают камеру. И это существенно улучшает задний обзор.
Кроме камеры в стандарте нет других средств для улучшения безопасности при парковке. В салоне много черного цвета и пластика. В местах наиболее частого соприкосновения с пальцами водителя и пассажиров устанавливается мягкий пластик.

Поэтому салон вызывает хорошие чувства и не кажется дешевым. В ногах водителя достаточно места для эффективного управления и комфортного длительного пребывания.
Есть много мест для хранения вещей. В багажном отсеке места меньше чем у некоторых конкурентов. Но объем не критически маленький. Есть много подстаканников.
Для багажа есть 589 литров пространства. Его меньше чем в Civic на 139 литров. Поэтому кузов Corolla iM более универсален чем у седана. Но он менее вместительный в сравнении с некоторыми конкурентами.

The reason that we can say that the all-new 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback is “all-new” is because it really doesn’t share anything in common with the Corolla sedan that’s currently on sale here in the U.S. The Corolla Hatchback is based on the European version of the car, which Toyota calls the Auris. It rides on a brand-new platform — Toyota’s global architecture — and it’s an improvement in pretty much every single way over the current Corolla sedan.

Under the hood of the Corolla Hatchback is a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 168 horsepower. That’s a 31-hp improvement over the outgoing Corolla iM. That car felt a bit sluggish, but this car doesn’t. The bigger changes to the powertrain — for me — actually come with the transmissions.

There will be two available transmissions on the hatchback: a continuously variable transmission or a six-speed manual. Both get changes that make them a bit more drivable and a bit easier to live with. Starting with the CVT: It is a CVT, but at the bottom of it is what we call a “fixed gear.” Essentially what it has is a 1st gear that behaves like 1st gear in a traditional automatic transmission, which gives it better off-the-line acceleration. The clutch action was sloppy, the throws were long and the gates weren’t very good. It was so bad that it actually made me prefer the automatic version. In the hatchback, it’s been cleaned up; the clutch action is more linear and the gates are more well-defined. It’s an easier manual to drive.

It also comes with two features that you wouldn’t necessarily expect from a Toyota manual. The first is downshift rev-matching. When you shift down, the engine will rev up to match the new gear, which smooths out downshifts. The second feature is an anti-stall feature; if the car detects a potential stall in 1st gear, it will increase the revs automatically to prevent one from occurring.

With the disappearance of Scion brand from the market, many good and well-liked cars were set to be relegated to the bin and one of these was the Scion iM hatchback. Luckily the car was good enough for Toyota to take up the model as one of its own in the U.S. and has added it to their extensive Corolla lineup under the name of the Toyota Corolla iM, and it promises to be a popular model for the automaker. It remains feature rich, retains the funky styling and most importantly, the good pricing – all wrapped up with Toyota’s brilliant backing and warranty.

2018 Toyota Corolla iM Models


Inside the Toyota iM things look good, you can see you’re in an affordable car but that doesn’t necessarily mean things are cheap. There are hard plastics used, but they work with the look and feel of the cabin and the almost minimalist look to the dash and center console. The multifunction steering wheel is chunky and feels good in hand, behind that there’s the instrument cluster with separate surrounds for the main gauges with a 4.2-inch color info screen between them, it does look a little odd but not bad.

Space is good in the iM, you’re basically looking at a cabin in a Corolla in terms of seating with space for 5, but the trunk is larger with 20.8 cu-ft. of cargo space. There are very few options to consider for the Toyota iM, it’s one of those what you see is what you get cars. The seating is only available with cloth fabric, although you may find leather and trim options available at dealership level.


The Toyota iM is made to be an affordable people carrier and it does this job well. The available power won’t win any races, but it’s more than enough to keep up with traffic and overtake when needed. The suspension is hard but compliant, but it’s not too uncomfortable. There is an option to stiffen it up even more with TRD sports springs. Steering feedback is muted but the there’s not huge power on tap to make this a concern. The 6-speed manual transmission is good and gets the power to the front wheels with smooth and purposeful shifts.

The iM can be had with a continuously variable transmission with 7 «speeds» to it, but this should really only be optioned by those who’ve never used gears before. It does a good job of course because it’s a Toyota after all. The whole combination offers good mileage though, with 35 mpg claimed for highway use (36 for the CVT).

Offering a bit more sportiness and a lot more versatility than the Corolla sedan, the 2018 Toyota Corolla iM hatchback gives budget-minded buyers all the quality and high resale that come with owning a Toyota at a price that won’t break the bank. Because most cars bundle popular options into pricey packages, the iM’s one-size-fits-all mono-spec equipment list gives customers popular features that can cost hundreds, even thousands more on a comparably equipped Mazda3, VW Golf or Ford Focus. And, although its fuel economy is impressive, the Corolla iM’s modest 137 horsepower pales in comparison to the competition. Need another reason to buy a Corolla iM? Toyota Safety Sense C (TSS-C) is standard on every car.

What the 2018 Toyota Corolla iM lacks in power, it more than makes up for in efficiency. The 137-horsepower 1.8-liter engine is a mileage champ, but if you’re looking to get the most of the engine’s ability, we suggest opting for the 6-speed manual. The story improves when we get to the ride and handling department. The Corolla iM’s light body and taut suspension make it quite enjoyable on curving mountain roads, yet amazingly maneuverable in tight city confines. We dare say it’s as enjoyable as the more robust Mazda3 and far more connected to the road than a Kia Rio or VW Golf. Best of all, unlike a Mini Cooper or Fiat 500, the Corolla iM’s ride isn’t harsh or punishing over rough pavement. The cabin is fairly quiet at highway speeds, and what noise does get through can quickly be mitigated by turning up the iM’s excellent standard 6-speaker Display audio system.

The 2018 Corolla iM comes as one, well-equipped model, taking all the hassle out of buying a car. Most of the iM’s best features are optional on other cars, leaving buyers with only two choices: transmission and color.

TSS-C is Toyota’s comprehensive suite of driver assists that includes pre-collision braking, lane-departure alert and auto high beams. Where other manufacturers make you buy expensive packages or top-line trims to get these features, the Corolla iM delivers them as part of its standard-equipment list.

Boasting an edgy-yet-tasteful layout, the Corolla iM’s cockpit emphasizes functionality. The audio and climate controls are as straightforward as they come, while symmetrical armrests and an adjustable steering column yield an appropriately neutral driving position. Power seats are not available, but the 6-way front buckets leave nothing to be desired in comfort or lateral support. And while rear legroom can’t measure up to rivals like the Mazda3, Kia Rio5 and Volkswagen Golf on paper, the Corolla iM’s rear quarters feel plenty roomy in the outboard seating positions. Design-wise, the Toyota’s Corolla iM hatchback for 2018 keenly embraces the tuxedo T-shirt philosophy: It wants to be formal, but it’s also here to party. Moonroof lovers, you’re out of luck.

The Corolla iM’s mono-spec packaging structure means that aside from the transmission and exterior color, your options are limited to some dealer-installed equipment such as a navigation system, the aHa Radio app, body-side ground effects, side graphics, rear wind deflector, paint protector and interior lighting.

Developing 137 horsepower and 126 lb-ft of torque, it can be paired with a standard 6-speed manual or optional continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) featuring a 7-speed simulated sequential-shift mode. Beyond altering shift points, there’s a Sport setting that also quickens throttle response and adds weighting to the electric power steering. Combined fuel economy averages rank in the low-30-mpg range and, as you might have guessed, all Corolla iM’s run on regular gasoline.
